Jurassic Park Play Area

The playground has equipment that includes:

• a roundabout (that was missing seats when we visited)
• a zip wire.

Next to the play area is a basketball court.

A Monster Tube Slide

The slide’s chute can only be reached by climbing up the inside of a vertical tube.

It’s basically a climbing wall inside a tube so is not suitable for younger children.

Finding The Play Area

To reach the play area from the Great Hollands car park, face the shops and take the path on the right through some trees (as in the photo). Keep walking for a couple of minutes and you will see the play area looming above you on the left.

There are some restrictions on the use of the splash pad – only children under 8 years are allowed to use it before 5pm and there are no balls or inflatable toys allowed.

mini golf

and a miniature railway, which operates on certain days of the year.

The Blackwater Valley Path

The Blackwater Valley Path is 23 miles long, marked by signposts and divided into 12 sections.  These sections follow the river, are not circular and do not finish where they start.  

The Twelve Sections

Section 1:  Rowhill Nature Reserve to Pea Bridge

Section 2:  Pea Bridge to Shawfields

Section 3:  Shawfields to Hollybush Pits

Section 4:  Hollybush Pits to Coleford Bridge

Section 5:  Coleford Bridge to the M3 Bridge

Section 6:  M3 Bridge to Blackwater Park

Section 7:  Blackwater Park to Sandhurst Station

Section 8:  Sandhurst Station to Grove Lake

Section 9:  Grove Lake to Longwater Road

Section 10:  Longwater Road to Eversley Bridge

Section 11:  Eversley Bridge to Jouldings Lane

Section 12:  Jouldings Lane to Swallowfield

The Paths 

Most of the paths are flat and easy to walk along. 

Some stretches can be muddy after wet weather. 

Other areas can be narrow

or lined with stinging nettles.  

Some run next to the A331 dual carriageway. 

Others involve crossing roads.  Please do this with care. 

Multi-User Surfaces

Sections 2 to 5 have a hardened surface suitable for multi-users, including wheelchairs, bikes and pushchairs. 

Cycling

Cycling is permitted between Sections 2 and Blackwater Park, which is about halfway along Section 6.  

Scooters

I have scooted from Section 2 to the start of Section 6 but would not do it again as the surfaces can be too uneven for little wheels. 

The A331 Blackwater Valley Relief Road

The A331 was built along the River Blackwater and Sections 2 to 5 of the path run alongside this dual carriageway.  

These stretches can be very noisy and have an industrial feel. 

Blackwater Valley Countryside Trust

The Blackwater Valley Countryside Trust look after and protect the natural environment of the Blackwater Valley.

Go Wild in Sheperd Meadows

Sandhurst Memorial Park also has some wild areas. In the corner is Seeby’s Copse, an area of ancient woodland, and at one end is Shepherd Meadows, a beautiful nature reserve with fields full of wild flowers and butterflies as well as the River Blackwater.

To find the Shepherd Meadows, take the path to the left of the play area and follow it past the pond, where you will pick up signs to the reserve.

Pick a Car Park

There are two car parks. The first is next to the play area (GU47 9BJ).

The second is on Marshall Road (GU47 0FJ – will take you past the car park, which is on the opposite side of the road than the residential houses). This is the car park for Shepherd Meadows and it is about a twenty minute walk to the play area.

Shepherd Meadows

The meadows are a nature reserve of about 100 acres split in two by the River Blackwater and the Blackwater Valley Path.

This is a particularly lovely section of the river, with benches and angling platforms scattered along it.

The Circular Walk

There is an easy to navigate, circular walk around the reserve that takes you up one side of the River Blackwater, over a bridge and then down the other side of the river to another bridge. 

This route is labelled on the reserve map near the car park.

Poohsticks

The bridges are perfect for a slow game of Poohsticks, so be sure to gather some twigs along your walk.

Sandhurst Memorial Park and Play Area

Adjoining the nature reserve is Sandhurst Memorial Park and Play Area, a well-equipped recreation ground and play area with everything from a gorgeous pond and more ducks, to football and tennis, a sand pit, a huge slide and a zip wire. It also has toilets and a cafe with a seating area.

It took us 20 minutes, walking at a very leisurely pace, to reach the play area from the Shepherd Meadows car park.

The Paths

The paths vary from smooth to stony to grassy. They are clearly labelled on the reserve’s map. 

I took an all-terrain buggy and did not have any access problems, although I expect the meadows may become wet in the winter.

To find Shepherd Meadows from this car park, take the path to the left of the play area and walk past the balancing pond where you will pick up signs to Shepherd Meadows.

Pirate Ship Play Area

The pirate ship multiplay has a slide, a hammock, a cargo net, a climbing wall and easy to climb steps. 

Next to it is a water play area with wheels, chutes and a water pump. 

There is also a wide slide with a ramp, a spinning disc and a rock pile and basket swing.

Adventure Play Area

The adventure play area has the following equipment:

• a tube slide and wooden climbing frame with a climbing wall, a ladder, a fireman’s pole and easy to climb stairs 
• a wooden climbing frame made of logs

Next to the play area is Jacksons cafe and also a kiosk.

The Paddling Pool

California Country Park has a paddling pool you pay to use.  This is only open during the summer.

At the time of writing it was £2.90 for anyone entering the water and £1.20 for adults going in to supervise but not swim.  

California Country Park

As well as the adventure play area, Calirfornia Country Park has four main areas – Longmoor Lake, heathland, woodland and Longmoor Bog, an 8,000 year old mire accessible by boardwalk.

The Walks

The park map suggests different  walks that take you around the lake, through some woodland or over a small boardwalk. 

Scooters and Bikes

We often take bikes and scooters on a twenty minute, circular route around the lake.   This route is surfaced and starts and finishes at the adventure play area.

Langdale Drive Play Area

This playground is said to be suitable for children to the age of 13 years old.

The play equipment inside the enclosed junior area includes:

• toddler swings
• a seesaw
• a snail springer
• a spinning climbing frame made of rope 
• puzzle boards
• a multiplay with a slide and easy to climb stairs, a bridge and a tunnel.

Scattered through the trees are:

• a wooden frog and grasshopper
• a metal spinning cup
• two giant-sized swings
• a huge, rope climbing area that hangs like spider webs.

Ascot Heath

Ascot Heath sits in the centre of Ascot Racecourse. 

A surfaced path runs along the racetrack that you can scooter or cycle along. 

These paths can be a little bumpy in places.

Ascot Racecourse

Around the racecourse you can spot the grandstand 

enormously tall fences the horses jump over

a helicopter pad

a moveable piece of race track

points where different races start 

a pond with a fountain (but this is fenced off) 

and a tower for filming the races.

The Underpass

To find Ascot Heath and the Ascot Heath Children’s Play Area, head through the underpass and up onto Ascot Heath. 

Go straight across the heath and the play area is on the right opposite the Grandstand.

Ascot Racecourse Play Area 

The Ascot Heath Children’s Play Area has equipment said to be suitable for children up to 12 years old and includes:

• a swing
• a toddler swing
• a basket swing
• a climbing frame for older children with  spins

Pinewood Activities Adventure Play Area

The play equipment is divided between two areas, Pinewood Adventure and another, more traditional playground. 

The adventure play area has equipment including:

• toddler swings
• basket swings
• a small multiplay and slide for the very young
• a long rope swing
• a wooden climbing frame

• a rope climbing frame
• spinners
• a balance course with bridges, logs and ropes
• a tunnel
• a zip wire.

The Railway Play Area

The second play area has:

• swings
• toddler swings
• a small wooden train to walk along 
• a large play train with a tunnel and carriages 
• a play house
• a seesaw

• a long slide set into a hill
• a trampoline
• a climbing frame with a climbing wall, nets and monkey bars
• springers 
• picnic tables.

The Cafe

There is a cafe that serves refreshments and ice cream.

Pinewood Miniature Railway

Next to the play areas is the Pinewood (Wokingham) Miniature Railway.

It does not run everyday so please see their The Pinewood (Wokingham) Miniature Railway website for details of their open days.

Sports Areas 

On the other side of the car park is a field with a football pitch and a trim trail with six equipment stations (all aimed at those over 12 years).

Pond Dipping

Dickie’s Pond is also nearby and has a pond dipping platform.

Pond dipping equipment (nets, information sheets, a tray and magnifying glasses) can be borrowed from the cafe by leaving a deposit of £5. Near the pond is a woodland walk, with sculptures of woodland animals.

Pinewood Miniature Railway

The steam engines come in all shapes and sizes, each with their own style and character. My favourite was Moosejaw with its snow guard, golden bell and unusually shaped chimney. 

Unsurprisingly, my children loved the one that looked like a tiny Thomas the Tank Engine.

The Track

During your ride you weave through the trees, past multi-coloured fairy doors, signals, engine sheds, a water tower and a mini viaduct.

It Can Be Busy!

The railway can be extremely busy so try not to leave your visit to the end of the day.

Pinewood Activities Centre

There is also plenty to do before and after your rides as the railway is at Pinewood Activities Centre, which has two play areas,

pond dipping, woodland walks, a miniature railway, a cafe, a trim trail, sports field as well as various clubs and societies.
